Instrumental Music

New!

Seton's 2010 Instrumental Music Concert was a wonderful success.  The crowd enjoyed several impressive performances as well as some unexpected and entertaining guest appearances!  Congratulations to all of our girls who performed as well as our Instrumental Music Director, Ms. Debora Hood, for a wonderful night!

Please enjoy the this clip from the performance of "Beauty & The Beast," with special guest appearances!

Students are required to complete one fine arts credit from either the Art or Music department in order to graduate.

The following is a list of Instrumental Music course offerings:

  • Beginning Brass
  • Orchestra
  • Concert Band
  • Symphonic Band

Below are tips students should keep in mind while practicing!

  • Work in a quiet place, away from distractions
  • Practice with your best posture and position
  • Keep a pencil on your stand to mark errors or areas in need of practice
  • Use a timer to help plan and distribute your practicing time
  • Use a metronome to keep a steady beat and train your rhythmic senses, and it will help you practice slowly
  • Set goals for each practice session. Know what you want to accomplish with the time you have. Give yourself realistic but challenging goals, and focus on those parts of the music. Playing through the music from beginning to end with no goal is usually not an effective strategy.
  • Short frequent practice sessions are more important than, long, infrequent sessions.
  • Always warm up with scales or any sort of skill practice; then begin playing songs
  • Slowly build endurance by increasing the length of playing time each week and month.
  • PLAY EVERY NOTE WITH YOUR BEST TONE QUALITY! If not, you might not be using your time thoroughly. Play phrases with expression. Practice as if you were performing.
  • Brass players should warm up by buzzing on their mouth pieces before putting it on the instrument.
