Academic Departments
Elizabeth Seton has 10 academic departments. Each department has varying course and graduation requirements. Please review the information about each department and its requirements below. Please click here to review Seton's complete course catalog for the 2009-2010 school year.
Art Department
Students seeking their fine art credit may mix and match any combination of 1/2 credit course offerings. Upper level students may take up to two years of Advanced Studio. Fourth year art students may choose AP classes or Honors Advanced Studio.
Information Technology Department
All courses offered in the IT department provide useful preparation for courses in college in the areas of economics, business administration, accounting, and computer science.
English Department
Each required credit of English focuses on literary analysis, analytical writing, correct grammar, vocabulary development, and PSAT/SAT preparation.
Seton requires two consecutive years of the same foreign language; however, the school strongly encourages three or four years of study. Incoming freshmen already studying Spanish or French are given testing to determine their 9th grade placement.
All incoming students are given a math placement test to determine the appropriate course of study. Based on test results, students may be placed into advanced courses starting in 9th grade.
Music Department
Any student may take a music class to meet her fine arts graduation requirement. Intermediate and Advanced groups require an audition and teacher approval for placement.
Physical Education Department
After taking Physical Education I and Health during grade 9, a student will select at least one additional departmental offering to fulfill her graduation requirement.
Religious Education Department
The four years a student spends in the religious studies department are designed to give a strong foundation in the Catholic Faith. A community service component is incorporated into the curriculum in order to demonstrate the importance of practicing values learned in the classroom. It is the goal of the department to offer students a strong foundation that will carry them throughout their lives.
Science Department
All students are required to take Biology and two other sciences. The department encourages hands-on application of the scientific method in all of its classes through regular laboratory experiments.
Social Studies Department
All students must take World History, United States History, and Government courses in order to meet the three credit department requirement.
Student Support
All department teachers are available before and/or after school to assist students in need of additional practice with or clarification of classwork. National Honor Society upperclassmen provide tutoring after school twice weekly in any subject. Incoming freshmen who require more comprehensive, ongoing support to ensure their academic success may opt to take part in Seton's Bayley Program. Students with organizational weaknesses or minor diagnosed learning disabilities often find the structure of this program particularly helpful.
