Hey Fellow Graduates! Just wanted to say "Hi", and let those who attended our last reunion know that I had a blast, and enjoyed meeting up with a lot of you. My husband and I also thoroughly enjoyed hanging out before and after the reunion at Jacky Kulick's house, and wanted to thank Jacky, albeit belatedly, for inviting us to do so. In addition, I wanted to share with you our newest addition to the family. Miranda Victoria was born on Aug. 30th, 2007 (2 months early), weighing 2 & 1/2 lb.s, and measuring 15". She came home October 3rd, after spending some time in the NICU, growing and maturing. She's now a small, but healthy, 10 month old, who's crawling, happily babbling, and preparing to walk. On a sadder note, please keep Dee-Dee(Duggin) Benza, and her son, Brian (6), in your prayers, as they suffered the losses of both her mother, Linda Duggin, and her husband, James Benza, within the past year. Dee-Dee now lives near Hanover, PA, where she works as a Nursing Assistant at Hanover Hall. You'll be hearing from her soon, as well. Keep in touch with us when you can, as we love to hear from our former classmates.

Madelyn C. “PUF” Leeke '82

Madelyn C. “PUF” Leeke, (Class of 1982) completed Flow Yoga Center’s 200 hour certification program (approved by the Yoga Alliance) that provided a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of teaching Hatha yoga with an emphasis on the Vinyasa style in March 2006. In June 2006, Madelyn completed her Usui Reiki – level one training with Reiki Lotus Healing Center and was certified as a reiki practitioner.

In June 2006, Madelyn founded kg yoga (kind and gentle yoga) and began teaching clients one-on-one. Madelyn teaches a monthly office yoga class on Saturday mornings at Trade Secrets, a local store in the U Street neighborhood in Washington. She also writes a weekly yoga blog ( http://kgyoga.blogspot.com ).

In addition, Madelyn owns Kiamsha.com, a company that allows her to share her gifts as an artist and writer. For the past three and half years, she has worked as an artist-in-residence for Smith Farm Center for Healing and the Arts at Howard University Hospital. As an artist-in-residence, Madelyn works primarily with African Americans, Africans, West Indians from the Caribbean, and Latinos. Each week she engages them in creative arts activities as part of the healing process and creates awareness and support for the arts in healthcare among professionals, caregivers, and the community-at-large.

In April, Madelyn traveled to Chicago to attend the Society for the Arts in Healthcare Conference and presented about the work that she does with patients and staff at Howard University Hospital. Her presentation addressed how she uses poetry to help patients discover that it is not luxury, but a natural medicine that gives voice to an individual’s truth. She also hosted a poetry café dedicated to the memory and creative work of Illinois Poet Laureate Gwendolyn Brooks.

Madelyn’s art collection entitled “Ask the Troubadours Who Have Come From Those Who Have Loved” is permanently housed at Howard University Hospital’s Freedman’s Hall Gallery of Art. The wire sculpture collection celebrates the loving capacity of African people throughout the diaspora as they navigate life with HIV/AIDS, care and serve those individuals living with HIV/AIDS, and work towards eliminating HIV/AIDS in the world.

Jennifer Prochnow Mercier '91

Glad to see some of the class of 91 have been posting to the website. Would love to hear from more of you.

It does not seem like we have been gone for that long. Todd and I will be celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary in December. Doesn't seem that long. We have three beautiful children: Lindsay (8), Collin (6), and Tyler (4). I am still working with the FDA in the area of Women's Health. We spend most of our time being the transportation to all the kids' activities, but wouldn't trade it for the world.

Too bad we didn't have the 15 year reunion, but maybe we can have something unconventional. (11/14/2006)

Amber Zuri Middleton 95

Hello everyone!

I saw that my sister contributed here already (even though it needs to be updated) and thought I might as well do the same. I am still single, but happy. I live in the house I grew up in since my parents moved out to Waldorf. I am a special education teacher in PG county, and I love it! I am also working on my second master's degree. My first was in sports administration, and this one is in special education. While I love my full time job as an educator, I do have a business that I can do on a part-time basis and get full time benefits. My mother and I have an internet based travel agency, comparable to Travelocity and Expedia, but more personal. Our website allows for the "extras", such as spa treatments or golf tee packages.

Adia and I have separated, yet we talk every day. No one ever thought we would make it, as if twins are not allowed to do so. She is living in Florida with her husband Mark, and their three boys (Sean, Malik and Mark). She is also a teacher, has her own business, and working on her second master's as well. So even though we are apart, our lives are still very similar.

I look forward to hearing from you all. (10/30/2006)

Angela Cook Porter '83

Joyce Kalinofsky McKay 65

Since my husband retired from the federal government this past January, I've been getting used to living the life of a retiree. We bought a thirty foot travel trailer and proceeded to do some traveling. Our biggest trip was going across the country from California back to Maryland. I flew to California and my husband, Rob, drove across with our eight year old grandson. I went earlier to take part in our annual Mom and Sisters Retreat. I'm still involved in Marriage Preparation Ministry and the Sick and Bereavement Ministry. this November, Rob and I will start training couples to be Marriage Preparation Ministers for the Archdiocese of Baltimore.  Susan Donnelly Levine '77

Family and Friends,

Our daughter Susan succumbed to her malignant melanoma today (10/17) at about noon time, after a struggle of  more than two and one half years. She died peacefully, free of pain with Adele and I holding her hands and her husband Chuck caressing her face. Her older sister Mary was there with us, and her younger sisters Noreen and Patty arrived just a few moments after she passed. Our son Tom was in Kansas City on business, and as I write this is on his way home.

Susan was 47 years old. She was born at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City, but she was raise in Bowie, MD. She attended St. Pius X Grammar School in Bowie, Elizabeth Seton High School Bladensburg, MD and received her Nursing Degree at The Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC.

Susan and her husband Chuck have three daughters, twins Kristen and Erin, age 16, and younger sister Kerrie, aged 15. All three attend York Catholic High School in York, PA; Kristen and Erin are Juniors, and Kerrie is a Sophomore

Susan was a Lector at St. Joseph's Church in York, and also served as a school nurse for St. Joseph's Elementary  School. She also served as a Health Care Ministry Nurse for St. Joseph's Parish, and was an officer in the York County Medical Society Alliance. In addition to her three children, Susan is survived by her husband Dr. Charles B. Levine.

Expressions of sympathy may be sent to Dr. Charles Levine and Family, 755 Oakwood Drive, Red Lion, PA  17356. A Memorial Fund has also been set up, and contributions may be sent to: The Susan Donnelly Levine Melanoma Awareness Fund, York Community Foundation, 20 West Market Street, York, PA 17401-1203.

A burial mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph's Church at 11:00 AM on Friday, Oct.20th, and burial will be at Holy Savior Cemetery. The family requests that you PLEASE do not send flowers - it would only make Susie mad anyway.

Adele and I would like to sincerely thank one and all who offered their prayers for Susan during the span of her illness. It not only sustained her during her most difficult times, but it was a great support for her immediate family as well. God Bless you all, and we hope to be seeing you again in  the near future.

Love

Thom & Adele Donnelly

It is with a filled and joyful heart that I share with my sisters the release of my book entitled, His Love Is Freedom! In short it is a book about relationships and how your vertical connection with God impacts your horizontal connection with others. Based on over 100 interviews with single and married people, I discuss such topics as choosing a life partner, being a good witness, love in the married state, accepting the departure of a loved one, dealing with conflict in the workplace, and child rearing in the 21st century. Included are short stories, poetry, and related scriptures. I pray you will go out and support this book and be blessed. Please visit my website ( www.vhelena.com  ) for more information and don't forget to leave a message in my guest book. I would love to hear from you. Books are available at amazon.com and will soon be in stores.

I enjoy being a Girl Scout leader for my daughters troop and spending time with my family. I am still lucky enough to have been touch with alumni, Diane Bachtell Savard, Michelle Bussink Chervonak, Bobbi Ripley, and Renee Hinkley Smith.

Hi to the Class of 91. It seems like yesterday since we've graduated. I can't believe it's been 15 YEARS! How is that possible since I still feel like I'm 17? I hope this note finds you all happy and healthy. Just a quick update, after graduating from Va. Tech with a BS in Education, I moved to St. Petersburg, FL. I met and married a wonderful man, Sean, and we have a beautiful baby boy, Shane who is about to celebrate his first B.day in June. And YUP, Rita Farlow (who is engaged to a great guy- Jack) & I are still best friends and live 15 mins from each other. I miss you all and hope to see you all soon. I know this year should be our 15 yr Reunion but the Class of 91 has always been unconvential, so maybe we'll celebrate our 16.5 yr reunion. Much love to everyone - take care!

Just graduating today, May 14, 2006, from Spelman College in Atlanta made me reflect on my Seton graduation. I cannot believe it has been four years since I stood with my fellow classmates in the National Shrine, a graduate of Elizabeth Seton High School. However, again I stood today and became a graduate of Spelman College. My college choice was the best one I could have made. I love my school. While here, I have taken advantage of every opportunity available: community service, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., class councils, student government, department tutor, and many more activities. I was prepared the best that I could have been; shout out to Ms. Baker for her skills in teaching honors biology. Now that my wonderful college career ends, although I am sad, I know that this is only the beginning. I am headed to the University of Maryland Medical School to make one more step closer to my dream. I wish everyone in the class of 2006 congratulations. We have arrived, we have made it, and I know we will only succeed further.

Hey fellow Setonites! Especially the Class of 2001! Just a little note to fill everyone in. I was married on New Year's Eve (12/31/05) to my persistent high school sweetheart (how many times can you dump a guy and still have him come back?) Patrick Skerpon (DeMatha class of 2002). Fellow 2001 grad Amanda Sandor was a bridesmaid as well as class of 2004 Jackie Goebler. 2001 Lina Garcia was also part of the festivities. I am in my 2nd year teaching religion at Bishop McNamara in Forestville (so much for the prediction I'd be teaching at Seton...) and am beginning studies at Washington Theological Union for my MA in Theology (one step closer to my PhD!) Pat and I live in historic Annapolis and adore being able to walk downtown and have lots of fun at the harbor. No kids yet (give us a little time..). My sister Kelsey is freshmen at Seton this year (class of 2009) and loving every minute of it like I did. Hope all is well and please email me and fill me in on the happenings in your lives! (04/12/2006)

The love of my life, my husband Dale Collins, was taken by the Lord to his heavenly reward on Aug. 30, 2005. We were together for 23 great years. Dale was my soulmate, my kindred spirit. While I am thankful that he was received into heaven and his pancreatic cancer is healed, the body is weak and my heart is broken. My son Dillon and I celebrated his life with hundreds of family and friends on September 5 at St. Bartholomew.

If you have breast cancer in your family, the biological males in the family have a far greater chance of pancreatic cancer. Please have your loved ones get a yearly exam and CAT scan. By the time you have any pain, pancreatic cancer is usually at stage 4 with no cure. I tell you this so no other person has to go through the heart break of losing their soulmate.(01/18/2006)

My husband Chris and I just celebrated our 34th wedding anniversary. Our Son Chad is finishing up he's Federal Aviation Schooling and extra courses to also teach. Chad and his wife just had a little girl this past Oct. Our daughter Stephanie is working for Bank of America. Her husband Billy works for Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. They have two sons. Trace is 10 and Cole is 2. I think of Seton often. The nuns and teachers gave us the tools we needed when things got tough! Love, faith in God, respect of others, compassion, humanity and the best friends at Seton. All this has helped me. I have been disabled for the past 25 years, and I have been truly blessed with a wonderful family. (12/07/2005)

Hi, everyone! Hope you are well! I am beginning my fifth month of teaching English in Zentsuji, Japan. Zentsuji is the birthplace of Kobo Daishi (originator of the Shingon sect of Buddhism). The city is really beautiful and everyone is incredibly nice. We're finding together that we have many interesting similarities and differences about us. There are gorgeous mountains everywhere! The students are very smart and are often ask about American culture. I also do some translation work and I even did a speech in Japanese (omigosh!). There's always something interesting to do and Sanuki udon noodles are the best! I just wish I had a car here! ^_^ Car or no car, I am blessed to have a Catholic church and pre-school right beside my apartment. After I return home in April, it's back to George Mason U. for my license and M. Ed. in Japanese Education. ...Just like to say...wouldn't have even thought about trying out Japanese if it wasn't for Ms. Northrop, Mrs. Shaugnessy, and Mr. Wong, so I'd like to give a BIG YAY! to the language masters! Patricia Long Wickline '68

Hi all '68 Grads! I'm married to my childhood sweetheart, Bob Wickline, for 36 (going on 37) years and we are living in a rural community just across the MD/PA line in Hanover. It's a lovely community and we've lived here now for 30 years (as of August '05). Bob retired from the Postal Service in January '04 and he's now teaching in Catholic school as a full time science teacher. I'm semi-retired from managing medical practices (last was Oncology) and doing medical transcription from home. I love it!

We have two beautiful grandkidlets, Lucas (5) and Sarah Elisabeth (2). Life is grand, as they say. Our most enjoyable travel so far has been to Greece and Turkey to walk in the footsteps of St. Paul. What a fantastic trip! Don't let me pull out the pictures and bore you! *wink*

I'm looking forward to hearing from some of my former classmates. I haven't made it down to any of the reunions, so far, but I'm hoping there won't be any conflicts when the next one rolls around.

We REALLY need to get a better communication system going for former grads!

Hi class of 1983! A follow-up to my post a while back... I’m beginning my second year at university of New Hampshire for my doctorate in sociology. I have 1 - 1/2 more years of course work, and then the dreaded dissertation, which should add another few years onto the whole thing. When finished I plan to teach sociology at the university level, as well as research. My husband (randy Akers) and I have a long-distance marriage while I’m in school; he's in Cazenovia, New York (which is officially home) teaching art at Cazenovia College. We have a full, busy life with lots of travel, art and academia! Hope everyone out there is doing well. Would love to hear from class of 1983 buds - time flies. Brenda Ashby Drerenberger  '77

AS we get older we have a tendency to look back at where we have been. Elizabeth Seton holds very fond memories for me - and I haven't forgotten my sisters of the class of 77. I have accomplished much in my life, the best being married to my husband Tad of 20 years and being the proud mother of 3 sons - Thomas (19) Brandon (15) and Chris (13). My husband and I own and operate an Electrical Contracting firm (of about 30 employees) in Warrenton Virginia. Our boys keep us incredibly busy with school and sports. Having been raised in a house of females, living in a house of males has been quite an experience. But I love it. I would love to hear from my classmates.... Peggy, Lorraine, Kathleen, Ruth, Eva, Ellen, Theresa...I hope all is well. To the Sisters that provided a great education, I think about you often. The many opportunities that I have had and been able to take advantage of is because the excellent education that I received at Seton. Thank you many times over.

Hey! Wow, we are starting to get up there gals aren't we! Almost time for that 10 year, geez mom, (Amy Reese Lawrence '77) how old does that make you? Well yet another busy year. Last summer my husband Scott and I moved to Hagerstown, and I have been able to enjoy being a stay-at-home mom for a few months. Good thing too, because I have been very busy running after my 17 month old daughter AND my newest addition, Leilah, who was born in December. Scott is starting to feel a little out numbered in our house! We are looking forward to Auntie Jeanine's grad in just a few months, still finding it hard to believe my baby sister is grad from ESHS. I hope all the grads of '96 are doing well, happy and healthy. Anyone started the plans for our big bash? let me know, would like to help! dncing78@aol.com

To Donna and Patti (Class of '70): Hmmm, I asked Jeeves for Annapolis hardware stores, got Seton's website as a listing, and read about a St. Margaret's School reunion. How interesting! Updates: My hitch at University of Maryland is over (both as student and employee). Now I teach at Annapolis High School. This spring we have three graduations: Tom (my son) from college Nikki (my daughter) from high school, and Sylvia (Mary's daughter) to middle school. Jim's at the Univ. MD and photographs for Terps online. If you plan to be in the Davidsonville area (off Central Ave), let me know. I'll brew some tea. concord8000@yahoo.com  (written 3/05/2005)

I am employed at the United States District Court in Greenbelt, Maryland, as a Courtroom Deputy to the most wonderful Judge. I married my husband, Ron, in 1977 and moved to St. Mary's County in 1979. I have one son, Ronnie, who is 23. Colleen Kincius Brown was kind enough to send me pictures of the 35th reunion which I totally enjoyed - I only wish we had names to go with all of the pictures.

My husband Greg and I adopted our first daughter from China just over a year ago. She is now three -- almost four -- and is the light of our lives. We just completed our final bit of paperwork to adopt our second daughter (from China as well) and we are just waiting to hear when we can go and bring her home. We are probably looking at a summer or fall date. (The process takes a while!) We currently live and work in Virginia. Life is good! I would love to hear from you ... Feel free to email me at pairofsox@juno.com  I hope all of you are experiencing life at it fullest!

Life is good. In January 2004 I took an early retirement package from The Washington Post. It was wonderful to have some time to get my head together about "what's next." Of course life wasn't exactly boring. A refugee family from Kosovo has been living with me for the past year and a half, and will probably remain with me for the foreseeable future. There are two girls and their widowed mother. Our biggest struggle right now is finding work for a middle-aged woman with little English and limited transportation. I welcome your ideas and suggestions.

Besides studying for the ministry, I have recently started a business that caters to individuals who find computers frustrating, confusing, and generally unfriendly. Yes, I am the proud owner of Your Computer Tutor, located in Vienna, VA, but serving the entire DC area. I would love to hear from old classmates. You can reach me at yourcomputertutor@verizon.net or check out my website, www.tutor4yourcomputer.com.

My life has turned out to bear no resemblance whatsoever to what I had envisioned when I was a 16-year old student at Seton!

Bobbe Morhiser '98

Dear class of 98 and other friends,

Well it's been almost seven years since we walked together down those butterfly stairs and it's amazing what we have all accomplished! I read through many of your entries and it's wonderful to hear how you are all doing! I live in White Marsh, which is right outside Baltimore city. I finished my undergraduate degree from Towson University in 2003 and I am currently teaching elementary and middle school band for the Baltimore Catholic schools. Though I absolutely love teaching, I plan to move to Nashville this summer to begin working towards a degree in music business. My dream is to become involved in Artist Management. So it anyone can help, let me know. I would love to talk to any of you if you have some free time. BJM1296@aol.com. Good Luck all! If I ever get married, I'll be sure to let you know. :o)

Elizabeth Arroyave Frederick '98

Hi Class of 98! Just got married! Katie Fisher came and we had a blast. I miss everyone. God bless you all. Wanna see some Pics? Click here!

Patti Tyler Zito '95

Hi class of 1995! I've enjoyed reading updates from several classmates and I thought I'd add my own update. I completed my B.A. degree in 1999 and M.S. degree in 2001 in Speech Pathology at Loyola College in Baltimore. I was married to Eric Zito (USNA '98) in May, 2004 after dating for 5 years. We are currently living in Mandeville, LA about 45 min. north of New Orleans. This is the first time I've ever lived outside of MD so its quite a change for me but we're getting used to the warm weather and cajun cookin'! I am working as a Speech Pathologist in a long term acute care hospital in New Orleans. Hope this message finds everyone in good health and happy times. Hope our 10 yr. class reunion comes together for next year - it would be great to catch up and reminisce!

Camille Jones '01

I hope all my classmates are doing well and enjoying life.

Ananda Kiamsha Madelyn (Puf - nickname) Leeke '82

Blessings Setonites,

I am currently wrapping up my first marathon training for the Marine Corps Marathon on October 31 in Washington, DC. I have learned many lessons during my training that I thought Seton alumni and students might enjoy reading about. See the essay below. Feel free to use it in any materials.

Rules I have learned so far during my first marathon training by Ananda Kiamsha Madelyn Leeke © Copyright 2004 by Madelyn C. Leeke

Long distance running is a solitary activity that can create a myriad of opportunities to fully explore the presence, power and beauty of Spirit in yourself, others, nature, and everything in this universe. I had this epiphany while running and walking the WOB trail in Reston, Virginia somewhere between mile 13 and 14 of my Team in Training Marine Corps Marathon training on Saturday morning. The sky was a gray overcast. Humidity met my sweat as I tried not to think about the possibility of completing 20 miles in what might turn into a rainstorm.

Before I experienced this awakening, my training was coming along well. I started slower than usual. Instead of my normal 5 minute run and 1 minute walk ratio, I used 3 minutes to run and 1 minute to walk. Slowly in between mile 2 and 3 I let loose and increased my ratio from running 4 minutes to 5 minutes and then walking one minute. My pace was just that my pace. It was probably slower than most and could even qualify for the slowest, but it was mine. This acceptance was the beginning of rules I have learned so far. Rule 1 is ONLY YOU CAN DEFINE WHAT WORKS FOR YOU. As the incredibly wise feminist writer Audre Lorde urged … we must define ourselves for ourselves. In the context of any physical activity such as running, you gotta honor and do what your body can do.

Rule #2 is BE PREPARED. My mother always stressed eating a good breakfast. And you know what? Her mother wit applies to running like it did to taking exams. When running, I prepare by eating a good breakfast and taking vitamin supplements. My breakfast is simple. I eat one pack of Safeway’s apple cinnamon oatmeal with a banana and raisins. My vitamin supplements include CVS’ weight sharp multivitamin, folic acid, and iron.

Rule #3 is STRETCH YOURSELF. In order to achieve any goal, you have to stretch yourself beyond your comfort zone. In running, I have learned that this rule applies literally and figuratively. I physically stretch before and after my run. I rely heavily on my yoga practice and focus a lot on doing the downward dog, sleeping child and cow positions to help me work through any pains in my lower back. I mentally stretch with visualization. Seeing myself successfully complete the run has worked. Creating a physical manifestation of my goals in the form of a collage has also helped. I use images and words from magazines to illustrate the desired result. It becomes a tool that I can refer back to for motivation.

Rule #4 is ENERGIZE YOURSELF. Achieving any goal takes energy. With running, I keep the energy flowing by properly hydrating my body with water and sports drinks. Gatorade and PowerAde have been my favorites. Usually, I consume plenty of water during the week I am scheduled to complete my training. The night before and throughout the day of my training, I consume large quantities of water and sports drinks on a regular basis. This means that I must take many bathroom breaks. So I take them before my bladder is on red alert. I have found it helpful to pack baby wipes so that I am comfortable making a connection with Mother Nature behind a bush. This process hasn’t always been easy … especially when it was raining like cats and dogs a few weeks ago and during my menstrual cycle, but I got through it because I knew a hot shower was waiting for me at home.

Rule #5 is REST. In the journey of life, there’re always moments when we are called to rest. REST preserves our energy to complete our goals. Throughout this training process, I have made a commitment to reducing my weekly activities and getting a good night’s sleep during the week of training and definitely the night before major runs. This commitment has often curtailed my Friday hangout activities. I use the word “often” because sometimes I have rebelled against my commitment on several occasions. One recent example of rebellion occurred Friday night. I was feeling a little anxiety over actually completing the 20 miles. So I hung out with friends at a Mexican dance event. Then I did something completely different. I went to Jo Jo’s, a local jazz club in my neighborhood with friends and ordered a pineapple martini and some fries (carbs are needed for running). I hesitated before giving the waitress my order because typically I don’t drink the night before I train. This was a no no … a cardinal sin I decided to break. And guess what? I drank the martini slowly, munched on the fries, and had about 4 glasses of water while listening to the jazz music. I ended the evening at 10:30pm and was in bed by 11:30pm. My wake up call for my Saturday training was for 5:00am. When the alarm went off the next morning, I got up without any stress. I was in a groovy state of mind. This groovy state of mind brought me to the next rule.

Rule #6 is BE OPEN TO BREAKING YOUR RULES. It is great to have rules, but sometimes we gotta color outside the lines in order to live and breathe freely. Being open to breaking your rules allows you to open up to all possibilities. Your vision expands beyond your reach. And this is the place where miracles happen.

The morning after I broke one of my rules, I moved through my routine with easy listening music, showered and dressed. While getting dressed, I discovered Rule #7 which is BE COMFORTABLE WITH YOUR PROCESS. One of the best ways to accomplish any goal or task effectively is to do it with peace. Peace comes when you are comfortable with how you are going about handling matters. For me, I reach a level of comfort in my training when I wear something that makes me happy and feel good. I adopted this approach from watching the late great Flo Jo and the Williams sisters as they successfully competed in their power outfits. My power outfit consists of a pink Nike short sleeve shirt, black Danskin peddle pusher running tights, Nine West pink/yellow/blue/white plaid hat (that I wore to the Women’s March in April 04’), matching pink cubic zircon stud earrings, and a pair of Nike running shoes.

Rule #8 is PRAY AND GIVE THANKS TO SPIRIT (or whatever you call your higher power). My ability to achieve my goals in life is directly tied to my connection to Spirit. I alone can do nothing, but together with Spirit, I can do all things. When I run, I pray and give thanks before, during and after my run. I give Spirit big praises especially during my recovery period.

My eight rule strategy carried me through the first 12 miles of my training on Saturday with a smile and ease. The time went quickly with no pain, doubt or fear of completion. My body adjusted to the trail and its hills. My process of hydration and feeding my body fuel with Power Bars and gels was on point. My thoughts and attitude were positive. When I passed other runners, I smiled or wished them well. Let me take a pause for the cause and have a “boo-ya” moment …. I never thought I would be able to say 12 miles went quickly, but I am saying … Hooray for me and all those souls who are able to say it and all those who will one day say it. Back to the story … When I got to mile 13 and 14, I was bombarded with thoughts of failure. I started to compare myself with other runners who were passing me. I noticed that I was the last one on one part of the course. When one of the coaches came to alert me that the final water station on the trail up was being dismantled, I knew I was in deep shit … He made sure I was okay and suggested that I go to the nearby Seven Eleven to purchase water if I needed it. There I was … really alone. I wanted to turn back and quit. What was I doing this for? I didn’t need to prove anything to anyone. These were just a few of thoughts I had. At mile 14.5, I slowed down and started walking. I got to mile 15 and continued walking. Out of nowhere I started singing songs. First I sang some of the gospel favorites I learned as the daughter of a choir director. You know the ones … This Little Light of Mine, Going Up To Yonder, and God Is. By mile 16, I was singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow and running again. My drive to complete the run kicked in. I wasn’t worried about being the only one on that part of the trail. When I met other runners who were finishing up on the opposite side of the trail, I smiled and congratulated them. They cheered me on. It got better as I moved through the fears. At mile 17, it was clear that I and another woman were the only ones left from our team on the trail. One of my favorite coaches joined me as a running cheerleader. We finished mile 18. As we approached mile 18.5, my coach’s cell phone started ringing. It was a message from the woman that I rode to the training with. She was ready to leave. Leave? Yes leave. She had finished her mileage earlier and had things to do. However, I hadn’t. I was 1.5 miles from finishing the hardest run of the training program. Now this is when most folks might freak out and lose their natural born minds. First, let me say that by the time I got back to the starting point, I had completed 19 miles. I only needed 1 mile to finish. Knowing that my usual walk to and from Bua Thai Restaurant was a mile gave me confidence that my mileage would be completed later that day. So I speed walked back to the parking lot with my coach and politely thanked the woman I rode with for waiting. I wasn’t about to apologize for taking my time in running. All the way home, I kept thinking about how her choice to leave could have destroyed my momentum and persistence in completing my training goal. By the time she dropped me off at my apartment building, I had reached a point of thanksgiving. As I wished her a peaceful weekend, I silently thanked her for choosing to leave before I was finished. Her choice forced me to make a choice of my own … which became Rule #9 - NEVE LET ANYONE’S STUFF AND CHOICES DETER YOU FROM COMPLETING YOUR GOALS. Enuf’ said!

After I got home, I washed my face, dropped off my training gear and water bottles, and returned to my urban trail down 16th Street. Instead of running, I walked the last mile. During this last mile, I realized that long distance running makes you come face to face with yourself. There is no place to hide in your mind. That’s when you get to see how you think and create your life with your thoughts and choices. And that’s where I discovered Rule #10 which is IF YOU THINK YOU CAN DO SOMETHING, YOU CHOOSE TO DO IT; IF THINK YOU CAN’T DO IT, THEN YOU CHOOSE NOT TO DO IT. It’s that simple … at least for me it is.

When I finished my mile 20, I gave thanks for this awakening … for my body, mind, spirit and heart … for the wonderful Thai food I purchased for lunch, the money to purchase the Thai food with, and most of all for Spirit’s ability to teach and bless me with wisdom through my marathon training, the gift of creative expression in writing, and the wonderful members of my sacred circle of family and friends who pray, affirm, support, nurture, and love me. As I laid on the floor in my art studio eating tofu and vegetables with curried peanut sauce, Rule #11 revealed itself … YOU ARE ABUNDANTLY BLESSED! Isn't that what Spirit wanted us to know when we were given the gift of eternal life? Sometimes I forget this truth and have to run and walk 20 miles to remember it. May my words help you remember this truth each and every day!
